Excellent article. I wish I could get many of the Left-wing leaning people I know to approach this topic logically instead of through the lens of emotion while I only seeing eyerolls.

They go on lengthy speeches or tirades (most often warranted) about bodily autonomy and fighting opression (in regards to human suffering only) while ignoring the institutions and industries exhibiting the epitome of those issues without clocking the hypocrisy.

Speciesism. We know what it is but how can we convince these people, who would easily fight along side us if the victims were human, that these thousands of years of atrocities are what led to the ones we see now inflicted upon humans?

Thank you, I really appreciate this. I think that disconnect is one of the hardest things to understand, especially when people are already passionate about bodily autonomy, oppression and justice in every other context.

For me, the most useful approach is usually to start with those shared principles rather than immediately confronting people with conclusions. If someone already believes power shouldn’t give us the right to dominate vulnerable individuals, there’s something there to build on.

The challenge is getting people to recognise that species shouldn’t be the point where those principles suddenly stop applying.
