Most people in Britain appear to think factory farming is unacceptable. Most people in Britain also eat animals.
According to the latest Vegan Society Empathy Index, 65% of UK adults say factory farming is unacceptable. But 82% of the 2,000 people surveyed eat meat. That means more than half of the meat-eaters surveyed object to the system responsible for producing most of the meat they eat. The Vegan Society cites Compassion in World Farming figures suggesting that 85% of farmed animals in the UK are factory farmed.
So we have a country where most people reject factory farming in principle while continuing to financially support a food system overwhelmingly dependent on it.
