France’s Heatwave Killed Millions Of Chickens Trapped On Farms
Up to three million chickens died on farms in France during the record-breaking heatwave of June 2026. Many were trapped inside sheds in Brittany. They could not escape the heat. They could not find shade, move somewhere cooler or reach safety. Their bodies failed around them as temperatures rose.
Animal organisations called it a massacre. It was. But these chickens were going to be killed anyway. They had been bred for the specific purpose of being slaughtered at around 6 weeks old. Had they survived the heatwave, they would have been loaded onto vehicles, transported to slaughterhouses and killed so that their bodies could be sold.
The heat did not take a long future from them. The industry had already done that. They simply died before someone could make a profit from killing them.
Birds Or Financial Losses?
When millions of animals die on farms, the industry talks about losses. Lost stock. Lost production. Lost revenue.
The language tells us exactly how the chickens are viewed. Their deaths become economically significant because their bodies can no longer be sold. The chickens themselves remain almost invisible.
There is little public discussion of what it means to suffocate or collapse from heat inside a crowded shed. Little acknowledgement that each number represents an individual who experienced thirst, fear, exhaustion and respiratory distress. There is even less acknowledgement that the supposedly preferable outcome was not freedom or survival.
It was slaughter on schedule.
The heatwave disrupted the production process. That is why the deaths are treated as exceptional. The system killing them was considered normal.
Bred To Grow Faster Than Their Bodies Can Cope
Chickens raised for their flesh have been selectively bred to grow at an extreme rate.
Between 1957 and 2005, their growth rate increased by more than 400%. Today, fast-growing breeds can gain more than 60 grams every day and reach slaughter weight in approximately six weeks. Their muscles grow faster than their skeletons, hearts and lungs can support. Many develop painful leg disorders, joint problems, skeletal deformities and lameness. Some struggle to walk far enough to reach food or water. They can spend up to 80% of the day sitting because moving their own bodies has become difficult or painful.
Their rapid growth also places enormous strain on their organs.
Fast-growing chickens face a higher risk of heart failure, respiratory problems, ascites and sudden death syndrome. Their elevated metabolic rate makes regulating body temperature more difficult, leaving them particularly vulnerable during periods of extreme heat.
These chickens were not unfortunate animals caught in an unpredictable natural disaster.
They were deliberately bred with bodies poorly equipped to survive rising temperatures because faster growth produces more flesh in less time. The industry created chickens who are especially vulnerable to heat, confined them in buildings they could not escape, then recorded their deaths as a production loss.
Would Slower-Growing Chickens Solve It?
Slower-growing chickens generally suffer fewer severe physical problems. Research has found that they are more active, walk more easily and experience fewer skeletal and cardiovascular conditions. They are also less vulnerable to heat stress.
In one economic model examining a transition to slower-growing breeds, estimated time spent in excruciating pain fell by 91%, while disabling pain fell by 75%. Those reductions are significant for each individual chicken. But they do not make the system ethical.
Slower-growing chickens remain bred, confined and killed for human consumption. They simply live longer before the slaughterhouse takes them.
There may also be wider consequences if demand remains unchanged. Because slower-growing chickens take longer to reach slaughter weight, one model estimated that farms could use 48% more birds, while the total time animals spent in farm conditions could rise by 69%. Less severe suffering for each chicken could mean more chickens being used and killed.
This does not justify breeding animals whose bodies collapse under their own weight. It exposes the limits of attempting to solve exploitation through breed changes alone.
The choice should not be between chickens who suffer intensely for 6 weeks and a larger number of chickens who suffer less intensely for longer.
The problem is the demand for their bodies.
Animal Farming’s Climate Doom Loop
The deaths in France were not an isolated event. A 2025 report examining 11 climate-related disasters found that at least 14.8 million animals on farms had been killed. Around 7,000 humans also died, more than 56 million people were displaced or affected, and financial damage exceeded US$120 billion.
The true number of animal deaths is probably far higher. Many countries do not consistently record how many animals die during floods, fires, storms and heatwaves.
In Brazil, more than 1.2 million chickens drowned during catastrophic flooding in 2024.
Nearly five million chickens died in Georgia when Hurricane Helene struck the United States.
Typhoon Yagi killed almost 6 million birds on farms in Vietnam.
During the UK heatwave of 2022, at least 18,500 chickens died while being transported. More died inside overheated sheds.
France’s 2022 heatwave and drought killed around 750,000 animals across 126 farms.
Different countries. Different disasters. The same basic conditions. Animals were trapped. They were locked inside sheds, vehicles, cages and enclosures. They could not flee rising water, escape wildfires or move away from unbearable temperatures.
Industrial animal farming contributes to the climate crisis while remaining dangerously vulnerable to its consequences. This has been described as a climate doom loop. The industry helps heat the planet. The hotter planet then kills the animals imprisoned by the industry.
Extreme Heat Is Becoming Normal
The June heatwave occurred during a period of accelerating global heating. The World Meteorological Organization found that 2025 was the third-hottest year on record, although two major datasets ranked it second. The average global temperature was around 1.44°C above preindustrial levels.
The years from 2023 to 2025 formed a continuous run of extraordinary heat. Current warming rates could push the long-term global average beyond the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C limit before the end of the decade. Scientists are no longer speaking only about preventing an overshoot. They are discussing how severe it will be and how long it will last.
Cities are already experiencing the change. Across 43 major capitals, the number of days above 35°C increased by 25% between the 1990s and the decade ending in 2024. Days above 35°C doubled in Rome and Beijing and tripled in Manila.
Even London experienced twice as many days above 30°C.
Extreme weather events have quadrupled since the 1970s.
The June 2026 heatwave was followed by more major heatwaves in July. Wildfires burned across Britain and Europe. France deployed nearly 1,000 firefighters to tackle a blaze that destroyed more than 2,000 hectares of Fontainebleau forest. This is not a freak event that farms can simply wait out. It is the climate in which they now operate.
The Industry Behind The Heat
The climate crisis is primarily discussed through fossil fuels, energy and transport. Those are major sources of emissions and must be transformed. But food production is not a minor side issue. Food and agriculture produce, by conservative figures, around one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions. Meat production alone is responsible for nearly 60% of the food sector’s climate emissions.
Animal farming also requires enormous areas of land. Half of the Earth’s habitable land is used for agriculture, and around 80% of that agricultural land is used for grazing or growing crops to feed animals. Forests are cleared. Habitats are destroyed. Carbon stored in trees and soil is released.
One peer-reviewed analysis estimated that animal agriculture was responsible for 53% of the global average temperature rise between 1750 and 2020. The paper attributed approximately 19% to fossil fuels. Whatever figure or method is used, the direction is not difficult to understand. Breeding tens of billions of animals, growing crops to feed them, clearing land, managing their waste, transporting them and refrigerating their bodies has a vast environmental cost.
Meat production has increased by around 400% since 1961. Average consumption has nearly doubled, and global demand is still expected to rise. More animals will be bred into the system. More emissions will be produced. More animals will be trapped inside the extreme weather that follows.
Why Is Nobody Talking About It?
Animal farming remains strangely absent from much of the reporting on the climate crisis.
An analysis of 940 climate articles published by 11 major US news outlets found that only 36 mentioned animal agriculture or meat production.
That is just 3.8%. Only around one-quarter mentioned food and agriculture at all. This silence has consequences. In one survey, 74% of people in the United States believed that eating less meat would have little or no effect on the climate crisis.
The public cannot respond to a cause they are rarely told about.
Environmental organisations are also reluctant to address the subject. In one survey, 92% of staff personally believed tackling animal agriculture was vital to climate action, only 11% said it was a leading priority for their organisation. Many feared audience backlash. Others claimed to lack expertise or believed different campaigns would be more effective.
The absence of animal farming from climate discussions did not happen by accident. For more than 30 years, industry groups in the United States have opposed campaigns encouraging people to eat fewer animal products for environmental reasons.
They hired scientists to downplay emissions. They pressured media organisations. They funded research designed to minimise the impact of dietary change.
When the Beyond Beef campaign called for US beef consumption to be cut in half, 13 agricultural groups formed a coalition to oppose it. Schools and cities supporting Meatless Monday received cease-and-desist letters. In 2012, the US Department of Agriculture withdrew a staff newsletter that mentioned Meatless Monday after pressure from the cattle industry. The industry insists that eating fewer animal products would make little difference, then markets supposedly low-emission beef and carbon-neutral milk.
Which is it?
If reducing consumption is irrelevant, why has the industry spent decades fighting even the suggestion of one meat-free day each week? The answer is obvious. Dietary change threatens sales.
They Died Too Early For Profit
The chickens who died in France were not protected from an ethical food system by an unethical heatwave. They were born into a system that had already decided when they would die, how quickly they should grow and how much money their bodies should produce.
The heatwave changed only the method and timing. Instead of being killed in a slaughterhouse and sold, they died in sheds and became financial losses.
Better ventilation may prevent some deaths. Emergency plans may reduce suffering during future heatwaves. Slower-growing breeds may be less vulnerable. None of these changes address the central injustice. We are breeding billions of chickens into bodies designed for profit, trapping them inside buildings and killing them when they reach the desired weight.
We are doing this through an industry that contributes heavily to the extreme weather now killing them before the slaughterhouse can. The answer is not to build a production system that kills chickens more reliably. It is to stop producing chickens for their flesh.
