India’s exotic animal trade is growing fast enough that the law is struggling to keep up. The market was valued at around US$42.6 million in 2024 and is projected to reach US$75.8 million by 2030. More than 40,000 people across 30 states and union territories had registered exotic animals under a voluntary disclosure scheme by February 2021, and researchers believe the real number being kept is considerably higher.
