The International Whaling Commission has spent 40 years operating under a moratorium on commercial whaling. At its 70th meeting, countries were still arguing over whether whales should be commercially killed at all. IWC70 concluded in Hobart, Australia, on the 2nd of October, marking both the Commission’s 80th anniversary and 4 decades since the commercial whaling moratorium came into force. The moratorium remains in place, but the meeting exposed how far international agreement on whales still has to go.
