More than 2,000 fish died at Furnace Brook in East Sussex in June 2024. Others sank to the bottom and were never counted. Large eels were seen climbing out of the lake before dying on the banks. The pollution incident was severe enough for the Environment Agency to classify it as Category 1. Fifteen trailer-loads of dead fish were removed. The angling business disappeared overnight. Its owners estimate £500,000 in lost income, while a biologist estimated the lake could take 10 to 15 years to recover.
