Ten lions are dead in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Preliminary findings suggest they were poisoned. Authorities found the lions in the Ndutu area on the 18th of September 2026 opened an investigation to determine exactly what happened and who was responsible. But these deaths did not happen in a vacuum. Ngorongoro has been the site of long-running conflict between authorities and local communities. The Tanzanian government began an eviction programme in 2022, arguing that a growing human population is putting pressure on wildlife habitat. Around 8,000 people lived in the area in 1959. That figure has since risen above 100,000. And the animals are caught in the middle.
Ngorongoro is home to around 25,000 large animals, including what UNESCO describes as the densest known population of lions. Lions are classed as vulnerable, with populations declining because of threats including habitat loss, declining prey and conflict with humans.
Nor are these deaths isolated.
Since June, at least 20 elephants have died from suspected pesticide poisoning in Kenya’s Amboseli ecosystem, close to the Tanzanian border. Authorities have not established whether those deaths were deliberate or accidental. We talk about “human-wildlife conflict” as though both sides sat down and chose a fight.
They didn’t.
Humans expand settlements. Humans reshape habitats. Humans decide where other animals may live. And when those animals interfere with what we want from the land, they become the “conflict”. Lions did not create this situation. They died inside it.
How shameful and unforgivable! 💔🥀
