Cashmere is sold as softness. Warmth. Luxury. Quality. Almost none of the marketing asks consumers to think about the goat.

That is where animal advocates come in. But knowing what happens in the cashmere industry is only half the job. If our goal is change, we also need to understand how people respond when something they buy, wear or admire is connected to animal exploitation.

There is no magic sentence. A major meta-analysis covering 41 studies, 112 interventions and around 87,000 people found only small overall effects from attempts to reduce consumption of animal products. People can agree with us, feel terrible, promise to change and then carry on exactly as before.

Effective advocacy therefore requires more than being right. It requires knowing the facts, understanding the person in front of you, and giving concern somewhere useful to go.

Know What Cashmere Actually Is

Cashmere is the fine insulating undercoat of goats. Most production takes place in China and Mongolia, although cashmere is also produced elsewhere. A goat produces relatively little usable fibre each year, which means several goats may contribute the annual fibre needed for a single jumper.

The industry often sounds harmless because cashmere is described as being “combed”. That word does a lot of work.

Investigations in China and Mongolia have documented goats being pinned down, stepped on, having their limbs forced into unnatural positions and having their hair pulled out with sharp metal combs. Goats screamed during the process, and investigators documented cuts and wounds. A separate investigation in Mongolia documented a kid being castrated without pain relief. And cashmere is not a slaughter-free industry.

Goats are valuable to producers while their bodies produce commercially useful fibre. When that value declines, goats may be killed. Investigations have documented goats being hit on the head before having their throats cut. That last point is important because people often mentally separate fibres from industries such as leather.

“They aren’t killed for cashmere, though.”

Maybe not at the moment their hair is taken. But the industry still breeds, manages and ultimately disposes of goats according to their usefulness to humans. Even if somebody invented the gentlest comb imaginable tomorrow, we would still need to ask the fundamental question:

Why are goats being treated as fibre-producing resources in the first place?

That is the difference between opposing particularly brutal practices and opposing animal exploitation.

Don’t Give Everyone the Same Speech

Imagine someone tells you they have just bought a cashmere jumper.

One approach would be:

“You know goats are tortured for that, right?”

You may be factually motivated. You may also have just turned the next 5 minutes into a debate about whether your accusation is fair. Research on behaviour change repeatedly warns about psychological reactance. People can become less willing to change when they feel that someone is trying to control them, even when the message broadly aligns with values they already hold. Try finding out where they are first.

“Did you know cashmere comes from goats?”

“I’ve never really thought about how cashmere is produced. Have you?”

“What did you think happened to the goats?”

Now you know whether you are talking to someone who genuinely knows nothing, someone who has been told goats are gently brushed, or someone who already feels uncomfortable about the industry.

Those are 3 different conversations.

Talking to Friends and Family

With people you know, you have an enormous advantage: you probably know what they care about. Use it.

Someone who adores animals does not necessarily need a lecture about climate change. Someone deeply concerned about environmental destruction may want to know about cashmere’s land footprint. Someone suspicious of corporate greenwashing may be interested in the difference between luxury marketing and what investigations have actually documented.

Research suggests animal concern can also be less politically divisive than some environmental framing. And studies of advocacy responses show that the same material can affect different audiences differently.

So listen first.

Suppose your friend says, “I thought the goats naturally shed it.”

You do not have to pounce.

You could say: “They do naturally moult, but that’s not the whole story. Investigations of commercial production have shown goats being restrained while their hair is pulled out with metal combs. And they’re commonly killed when they’re no longer profitable.”

Then stop.

Let them think.

A useful question might be: “How do you feel about it knowing that?”

That is very different from demanding that they immediately admit hypocrisy.

When Someone Starts Defending Cashmere

Not every objection needs a ten-minute rebuttal. Sometimes somebody genuinely wants information. Give it to them. Sometimes they are trying to reconcile new information with something they want to continue doing.

Learn to recognise the difference.

“But couldn’t you have ethical cashmere?”

Ask what they mean.

If they mean less violent handling, acknowledge the distinction. Then bring the conversation back to the principle.

“Suppose nobody was injured during combing. Would breeding goats to produce fibre for us and killing them when they’re no longer profitable be okay?”

Now the discussion is no longer trapped inside an argument about comb design.

The same approach works with tradition.

“People have produced cashmere for centuries.”

True.

But age tells us how old a practice is, not whether the practice is justified.

You do not necessarily need to say that immediately. Asking “Do you think tradition makes something ethical?” may do more.

This is particularly useful with ambivalent people. Research on attitudes towards using animals suggests ambivalence can contain genuine concern alongside familiar justifications.

Someone saying “I don’t like it, but…” may already be halfway into the moral conversation.

Explore the part before the “but”.

Talking to Strangers

Strangers require more restraint because you have no relationship to carry the conversation.

Keep the opening small.

At a stall, demonstration or outreach event, something as simple as “Do you know where cashmere comes from?” can work.

Then respond to their answer.

Do not try to download the entire cashmere industry into their brain in 90 seconds. One strong fact, one animal-centred explanation and one achievable action may be more useful than twelve statistics. For example:

“Cashmere is the undercoat of goats. Investigations in China and Mongolia have documented goats screaming while they’re restrained and their hair is pulled out with metal combs. They’re also killed when they’re no longer profitable. If you want to avoid supporting it, cashmere is actually quite easy to spot because brands normally advertise it.”

Now the person knows who, what, and what they can do.

Make the Goat Visible

Cashmere advocacy should not become a collection of fibre statistics.

There is a goat in the story.

She feels fear. She tries to escape restraint. Her coat serves her before it serves us. Her interests do not disappear because humans have found a profitable use for part of her body.

Perspective-taking and feelings of injustice appear promising in animal advocacy research, while simply increasing awareness does not always produce the same effects.

So do not merely communicate:

“This process is cruel.”

Ask the deeper question:

“Why should she have to experience any of this because we want a particular kind of jumper?”

Compassion can get attention, but compassion alone does not reliably create structural change. Research suggests excessive distress can also cause people to disengage. Giving people meaningful agency helps prevent advocacy from ending in helplessness.

Think:

problem → goat → injustice → action.

Not:

horror → horror → horror → goodbye.

How to Avoid Cashmere

Fortunately, avoiding cashmere is much easier than avoiding many obscure animal-derived ingredients.

Read the fibre composition label.

Watch for cashmere, cashmere wool, Kashmir wool and pashmina, and check blends carefully. A jumper containing 5% cashmere still contains cashmere. Pashmina generally refers to cashmere or cashmere-silk textiles. Marketing phrases such as “cashmere feel” or “cashmere touch” do not necessarily mean a product contains cashmere, so the composition label is what matters.

Cashmere can appear in jumpers, cardigans, coats, suits, scarves, hats, gloves, socks, blankets, baby clothing and knitting yarn.

Alternatives include cotton, lyocell such as Tencel, modal, hemp, bamboo-derived fibres, soya fibre and synthetic knits. None needs to be environmentally perfect for the conclusion to follow that goats do not need to be used. Different fibres have different environmental impacts, so check the whole garment rather than assuming “vegan cashmere” automatically means environmentally ideal.

Recycled cashmere is still cashmere. Recycling may change some environmental impacts, but it does not turn goat hair into a vegan material.

Social Media Advocacy

Online, resist the temptation to communicate only with shocking footage. Use footage when it shows something people need to see. Then give it context.

Show the goat.

Explain what is happening.

Challenge the luxury framing.

Give people something specific to do.

Instead of merely posting “CASHMERE IS CRUEL”, try building the message around the contradiction:

Cashmere is marketed as luxury. For the goats whose bodies produce it, there is nothing luxurious about being restrained, having their hair taken and being killed when they stop being profitable.

Then add an action:

Check the label. Leave cashmere on the rack. Ask the retailer to stop selling it.

That final step matters.

Don’t Stop at Consumer Choice

Individual avoidance is important.

But imagine persuading 100 people not to buy cashmere.

Now imagine persuading one major retailer to remove cashmere from 100,000 future garments.

We need both.

Companies including fashion retailers have adopted cashmere-free policies following campaigning, showing that corporate pressure can produce concrete change.

Write to retailers. Ask them whether they sell cashmere. Provide evidence. Ask for a specific commitment to phase it out, ideally with a deadline.

Do not merely say “do better”.

Give them something they can actually say yes to. And focus responsibility upwards. Herders can themselves be economically vulnerable and affected by degraded land while richer consumer markets and fashion companies drive demand. Collective Fashion Justice documents both environmental degradation associated with increasing cashmere production and economic pressures affecting herders.

The goat does not benefit from advocates choosing the least powerful person in the supply chain as the villain.

Petitions and Protests

The same strategic thinking applies here.

A petition should name the decision-maker and demand a concrete change:

“Ask [retailer] to end cashmere sales by 2027.”

Not:

“Stop cashmere cruelty.”

Petitions are strongest when they connect public support to somebody who actually has the power to act. Research on online petitions suggests they can contribute to policy change particularly when organised pressure intersects with institutions already capable of moving.

For protests, decide what success means before making the placards.

Are you educating shoppers?

Generating press coverage?

Pressuring a retailer?

Reaching shareholders?

Recruiting advocates?

Those are different objectives.

Research on protests also shows that disruptive tactics can generate backlash, so disruption should be a deliberate strategic choice, not something advocates dismiss as irrelevant.

If the target is a fashion company, protesting their flagship store, headquarters or shareholder meeting may create more leverage than simply standing on a random busy street.

What Success Actually Looks Like

Do not expect every conversation to end with:

“You’ve convinced me. I’m vegan now.”

That is not how most human behaviour works.

Someone might first discover that cashmere comes from goats.

Later they see an investigation.

Then they check a jumper label.

Then they choose something else.

Then they tell their partner why.

Then they email the retailer.

Then cashmere stops looking like an unquestioned luxury product and starts looking like something companies have to defend. That is social change.

Our job as advocates is not to win arguments for sport. It is to make exploitation harder to ignore, easier to reject and increasingly difficult for companies to profit from.

Cashmere begins with a goat.

Keep her at the centre of the conversation.

Because once we stop talking about “luxury fibres” and start talking about someone whose body is being used to make them, the real question becomes much harder to avoid:

Why should a goat pay the price for something we never needed to take from her in the first place?
