The Bearded Dragon Scratching At The Glass Wants Out
For years, people who keep bearded dragons in glass enclosures have had a cute name for a disturbing behaviour.
“Glass surfing.”
The animals repeatedly scratch, climb, rub or push against the transparent walls of their enclosure. It is treated as a quirky reptile habit, something strange that bearded dragons simply do. But new research suggests something disturbing.
They may be trying to get out.
A study published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science investigated repetitive barrier interactions in 24 captive bearded dragons over three years. The researchers wanted to understand whether these behaviours were genuinely motivated by escape.
The evidence strongly suggests they were. And when this research is considered alongside other recent studies showing that reptiles prefer more complex environments and experience persistent moods, the ethical question becomes difficult to avoid.
Why are we keeping these animals behind glass at all?
They Know Where The Exit Is
The 24 bearded dragons were housed individually in 39-gallon enclosures. Three sides were black and one side was transparent. Crucially, the transparent wall was also where humans entered the enclosure and where the dragons themselves would be removed.
Researchers filmed each dragon continuously for 12 hours at a time and recorded repetitive interactions with the enclosure barriers. The dragons spent significantly longer interacting with the transparent wall than any of the others.
That alone suggests they were not simply scratching randomly. Then the researchers made the experiment even more revealing. They covered half of the transparent wall with black paper.
If the dragons were interacting with barriers indiscriminately, researchers calculated that only 12.5% of their interactions should have occurred with the remaining visible section. Instead, the median was 29.5%. They were disproportionately targeting the part they could still see through.
The wall associated with entering and leaving the enclosure received the most attention. When part of that potential route was blocked, the animals focused even more heavily on what remained visible. Calling this “glass surfing” suddenly sounds rather inadequate.
Why Do They Want To Leave?
The answer is probably not simple.
Researchers found that the dragons were around 15 times more likely to defecate while performing repetitive barrier behaviours. One possibility is that they were attempting to leave before defecating, perhaps because they wanted to avoid fouling the area where they shelter. There were also important seasonal differences.
Females showed the strongest increase in repetitive barrier interactions during spring. Only four females displayed the behaviour during winter, compared with nine during spring, and females spent significantly longer interacting with barriers during this period. In the wild, female bearded dragons may roam considerable distances rather than maintaining fixed territories, potentially searching for new areas or mates.
Imagine possessing that motivation while living inside a glass box.
The researchers rightly caution that several different factors may influence the behaviour. Reproduction, exploration, environmental complexity, defecation and spatial restriction may all play a role.
But one thing appears increasingly difficult to deny. The animals are not mindlessly rubbing against glass.
Their behaviour has purpose.
The Cage Matters
The bearded dragons in the escape study were housed in 39-gallon enclosures, a size considered severely undersized for an adult. That makes it difficult to separate the motivation to escape from the conditions creating it.
Another 2025 study makes the relationship between confinement and behaviour even clearer. Researchers studied 12 juvenile captive-bred bearded dragons and rotated them between 3 different environments.
The first represented the sort of minimalist enclosure common in the companion animal trade: newspaper substrate, one rock hide, a food bowl and a small water bowl. The second offered greater complexity, including platforms, multiple hides, a hammock, plants and textured substrate. The third attempted to provide a more naturalistic environment, including live plants, bioactive soil and invertebrates.
The dragons behaved differently depending on where they were confined.
In enriched environments they were more active and rested less. In the standard enclosure they scratched against the glass significantly more frequently. The researchers suggested these barrier interactions could indicate stress, frustration or the desire to escape. They also measured behaviour associated with anxiety. Dragons from standard housing performed more tongue touches during tests involving unfamiliar environments and objects. Those housed in enriched conditions were more willing to approach unfamiliar objects. Then the researchers gave them a choice. The dragons preferred enriched enclosures to the barren standard enclosure. And they preferred the naturalistic environment to the less natural form of enrichment.
Again, the animals were telling us something. They wanted complexity. They wanted opportunities to explore. They wanted different surfaces, hiding places, plants and opportunities to forage. And when these things were absent, they interacted with the glass more.
Reptiles Are Not Simple Machines
One reason reptiles have historically been treated this way is that humans have spent centuries underestimating them. They are often portrayed as primitive animals driven almost entirely by instinct. The scientific evidence is making that stereotype increasingly difficult to maintain.
Another 2025 study investigated whether red-footed tortoises may experience mood states. Researchers trained 15 tortoises to associate one location with food and another with no reward. They then presented them with ambiguous locations between the two.
The tortoises did not respond randomly.
Their behaviour suggested an optimistic cognitive bias, with some individuals approaching uncertain locations more confidently than others. Those more optimistic individuals also behaved more confidently when confronted with unfamiliar situations. They extended their heads further and investigated a novel object more quickly. The researchers described the findings as preliminary evidence that reptiles may experience persistent affective states.
In simpler language, reptiles may have moods. This sits alongside existing evidence that they can learn, experience anxiety and seek pleasurable experiences. These are not biological ornaments for our homes. They are animals experiencing the world around them.
Millions Behind Glass
In 2024, an estimated 1.3 million reptiles were being kept in UK households alone.
That means questions about their psychological and behavioural needs are not obscure academic debates. They potentially affect more than a million animals in Britain. Research into better enclosures can obviously reduce some of the harms captivity creates. A larger, more complex and more naturalistic environment is clearly preferable to a barren glass box. But there is a danger in stopping the conversation there.
If an animal scratches against a wall because they want to escape, the solution cannot automatically be another wall with better decoration. If an animal prefers more complexity, the answer cannot simply be to ask how much complexity humans are willing to purchase. If females naturally roam large distances, providing an extra platform or another hide does not recreate freedom.
We keep asking how to improve captivity. Perhaps we should also ask why captivity exists.
Stop Treating Wild Animals Like Decorations
None of this means people currently caring for reptiles should abandon them. Animals already dependent on humans deserve the best possible environment, stimulation and care we can provide.
But preventing future captivity is another matter. Breeding more reptiles so they can spend their lives in glass enclosures exists primarily because humans want to possess them.
Their needs come second.
That is the problem.
The research on bearded dragons does not merely tell guardians to buy bigger enclosures and add more enrichment.
It reveals animals with preferences, motivations and behavioural needs. Animals who behave differently when their environments improve. Animals who may experience anxiety. Animals who choose more naturalistic surroundings when given the opportunity. Animals who appear to recognise the route out of their enclosure and repeatedly try to reach it.
Humans call it glass surfing.
Perhaps the bearded dragon scraping desperately against the transparent wall would describe it differently.
They are trying to escape.
